Leading Hobart retailer Lucy Given from LUC Design.

Hobart

How would you describe your store and the local world it sits within?

LUC is as an award-winning,  quality retail store offering an eclectic mix of iconic and classic brands, with a timeless (yet interesting) aesthetic. We have built a reputation as the premier retail destination in Hobart (and the State) for elevated and beautiful homewares and design. We reside in an original sandstone building in an historic area of the city, surrounded by legal chambers and public servants, and on a busy major street of the CBD. Our store windows have now become major fixtures of the city retail scene and offer a stylish canvas for what we offer in store

When you’re selecting pieces, what do you instinctively respond to first — form, material, story, or something else entirely?

This is such an interesting question, as I am not sure what it is that ‘clicks’ with me as a first response. So much of my sourcing is now done online - so I rely heavily on the visual presentation a brand makes, I then like to research their story or their design philosophy. I am extremely influenced by materiality too, and the quality of workmanship in a piece

Colour, form, materiality, quality, workmanship these ALL matter.

Who or what in your local world continues to influence your eye — whether that’s a person, a place, or a daily ritual?

I love living in Tasmania - that combination of the easily accessible natural world (walking on the beach, hiking on bush trails, being close to the water, slow living) coupled with the appreciation of great food, wine and coffee is increasingly rare to achieve from one place. It is hard not to be influenced by that lifestyle.

But at the same time I do get great inspiration from travel and that does influence my eye a lot. I am always eager to bring back ideas of how retail should be presented or what brands work well together etc

As the world becomes increasingly more fearful and aggressive, it gives me grounded satisfaction to live on a small island, feeling safe and then surround myself with  beautiful objects and design !

What keeps you inspired to continue shaping this space — year after year?

I want to remain relevant, and the older I get the more complicated that term is becoming !

But I get such joy from presenting great design and beauty

Luckily my chosen field of work allows me to be constantly exposed to new ideas, new trends, new design - so I keep myself informed and always want to express that in how I present my store. Good bricks and mortar retail is becoming increasingly side-lined by strong online retailers. When the joy of local shopping, interesting high streets, the simple pleasure of being inspired by spaces - how they smell, how they look, how they make you feel - when that emotion fades and diminishes ….then I will retire!

If someone had one perfect day in your area, where would you suggest they stay, wander, and eat?

OK…happy to help!

Start with a lazy breakfast at Berta  (or grab some pastries and a coffee from Six Russell)

Then book the ferry and head out to MONA - enjoy lunch out there, explore the best gallery/museum in the world

On your return enjoy a glass of rosé at Rosie in my Midnight Dreams

Head to LUC for some retail therapy, then also drop in to Alma for cool homegoods from Korea, Japan and Africa

Take a wander through St Davids park then along Salamanca to Princes Park and then wander around Battery Point, maybe an afternoon coffee at Jackman and McRoss

Get ready for your evening with a cocktail at Sonny or head up to North Hobart for drinks and dinner at OGEE

You’re welcome!
